Making music is not about making music!
Read that back. Lemme break this down.
Making music is not about the notes that you arrange, the chords you compose, the lyrics you write, the rhythm you lock into. Sure, this is what music is made up of, but this is not what making music is about.
Making music is a reflection of how you feel about being alive! Period.
The inherent yearning in all of us is what creates music. The quite literal need to call out to something greater, this is what carries the melodies. A posted letter to the place where answers exist. Proof of life to whomever is listening on the other side of all this.
I believe that we sang with each other long before we ever talked. We were probably hitting three part harmonies too, before anybody decided to pick up a torch. Making up syllables like singers do before they’ve figured out the lyrics. For a million years!
Making music is a reaction to living. It’s that simple. We as musicians tend to lose sight of this.
What I love about music is this – there’s a collective agreement that it is a real thing, and it’s important. That it is a tangible thing that you can connect with, grab onto, get inside. Yet, you can’t see it! We all have a gigantic database of songs in our minds, that don’t even exist in the physical world! All we have done is walk side by side with these sounds on our journey through time. Again and again. And they are real to us.

Been listening to “Please Forgive Me” by David Gray lately. Man, this tune has a mystical quality to it. Droning along and pulling you into it’s orbit. It also has such a recognizable 90’s sound to it. Early digital production backing just good simple songwriting. A sound I used to kind of avoid to be honest, but these days it is so nostalgic and comforting. I think I used to love this song as a 10 year old kid without even really knowing it. That digital-e acoustic guitar hook! That is the sound of the 90s!
