Bio

SHORT STORY

Matt Storm makes music that fuses vintage soul and jazz with modern alternative sounds. A songwriter since 13, his writing touches on introspection and hard truths. The multi-genre, multi instrumentalist is also a third culture kid, born in the U.S. and raised over seas before settling in Western Canada. His self-taught style reflects his non-traditional upbringing. Matt has been performing and touring extensively since 2014, as well as working behind the scenes with JUNO nominated artists. He is currently working on his third official project “SPILT”. The short EP is an experimental fusion of sounds and art that’s influenced Matt over years.

LONG STORY

A fan of music, this is how it started. Vancouver based Alt-Soul singer-songwriter and producer Matt Storm recollects how he became so obsessed with music, “When I’d stumble upon a cool album sitting around the house that none of my friends had heard of, I’d really challenge myself to get to know it”. It would usually be the album cover that drew him in. “Two Princes by Spin Doctors was the first song I remember that blew my mind. I knew it was adult music, not really for me you know? But I prided myself in becoming of fan of music like that. I was around 8 or 9 years old”.

Matt was raised on both sides of the pond. Born in Washington state, his family moved overseas when he was around 6. They settled in Saudi Arabia, then Pakistan, then Kenya, before moving back close to family in Vernon B.C., Canada when he was around 17. Music became a refuge for Matt, he’d grab the headphones to find solace, to find home on the road, “I was always the one who made sure we had the discman and extra batteries and all my favourite albums before we travelled. My bag was always heavy as sh%t”. By the time he started playing guitar and writing music at around 13, he already had all the ammunition he needed.

Around 2012, Matt moved to Vancouver B.C. to pursue music. He was slow to find his footing, experimenting with recording and songwriting, playing small shows and open mics, as well as in other people’s bands. In 2018, he released his first official EP “Major 7th Medicine”, a collection of stripped down songs, meshing elements of Soul, Jazz and Folk. The EP introduced his sound to the local indie scene in Vancouver, and landed some airplay on CBC and other local radio stations. Over the next few years, he put together a band and started hitting venues all over west coast B.C.

In 2020, Matt released what would become his biggest song “We Went Our Own Ways”. The song would go on to be featured on the highly popular YouTube channel “Sailing La Vagabonde”, as well as land multiple Spotify Editorials. It continued to circulate online throughout the pandemic years, and is currently sitting at 1.8 Million streams to date. By the time live music returned around 2022, Matt’s name had become a mainstay in the Vancouver indie scene. He was performing extensively, playing festivals like Victoria’s Rifflandia and Vancouver’s Mural Fest, among others. In February 2023, Matt took his second trip to Slovakia for a 5-show tour, as well as performing 5 shows in London UK, connecting with international audiences and refining his live show.

This year begins a new era for Matt, the culmination of experience over his 7 year journey as a recording artist and producer will be coming to a head with his new EP “SPILT” set to release this summer, self-produced and featuring some of Vancouver’s finest musicians. The first single “what do ya miss?” mixed by Grammy-nominated Ben Kane (D’angelo, Emily King), received warm welcome in Canada and internationally, landing on Spotify’s “Fresh Finds” and circulating on CBC radio as well as other local stations.
