Hey Guys,
The squirrels are massacring my tomato plant.
It’s not something I foresaw coming when I planted the damn thing in spring. Every morning I look out and think “weren’t there more tomatoes on that thing?”
They are methodical about it. Maybe 1 green cherry tomato a day. They work early mornings, I don’t get up early! They must know this. I’ve only caught them once and it’s annoyingly cute to watch them stand up on two legs and grasp the tomato with their little hands. My balcony gets shit sun and there are not many tomatoes lemme tell ya. They also dig up my herbs, but they don’t eat those.
As my eyes move over the half eaten carcasses of little green tomatoes on the deck, I try not to lump this into the countless endeavors I’ve failed at over the years. I try not to let it be yet another sign of hard times ahead. The sight of a half eaten green tomato that I grew for 5 months and did not get to taste, should not give me permission to spiral into paranoid depression.. the el niño of 2027 is gonna break already record temps… theres smoke in vancouver every summer now… trump staged a coup in Venezuela only to announce an oil deal 8 months later right in our face…
No. I won’t. It doesn’t have to be that deep
I planted something. I looked at it every morning. I watered it with water I gathered from a natural spring out in the country. I collected clam shells on the beach and put them in the soil. I marinated some banana peels in water and poured it in a few days later (not sure about that one). This plant brought me purpose at times I needed it, during times where the world was falling apart.
I don’t know where I’m going with this.
The world will continue to fall apart as it always has, and we will continue to watch. Yet, at times, I won’t. I will water my plant and chase off pesky squirrels. I will trim some basil and throw it in some spaghetti. I will make my own tomato sauce one day. I will have a whole greenhouse of big ass tomato plants and I’ll sit out there and smoke weed and make art.
These things are good and wholesome and we should cherish them. We aren’t changing the world, but shit, we certainly aren’t burning it down with our shitty little tomato plants. Man, if everyone grew a shitty little tomato plant and worried about it all summer the world might not be burning down.
Lemme get off my soapbox.
I’ve been listening to the song “LATE” by my friend Mikey Jose, produced by Benjamin Millman. Its really fucking good. He is such a sensational singer and the production absolutely slaps. I turn that shit right up in the car and floor the gas pedal. Usually a sign of a banger. Mikey always writes about being behind, missing out on things, worrying that he’s missed his chance. You’re already here Mikey. Make your music and sing to the people and enjoy. It’s the 21st century and there is no future ahead, don’t ya know? Time is irrelevant as we barrel towards a brave new age. The time is NOW.
